Why to compost, how to compost and the benefits of composting.

Composting 101:

GOOD FOR THE EARTH

According to the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI), “composting is a natural process that turns organic materials into a valuable soil amendment.” Composting plays a unique and vital role in sustainability efforts. It diverts organic waste away from landfills and turns them into a product that can help the environment.

BENEFITS OF COMPOSTING

  • Improves soil and water quality
  • Can improve crop yields
  • Can replace chemical fertilizers
  • Reduces methane emissions in  the atmosphere
  • Helps aid reforestation, wetlands restoration, and habitat revitalization
  • Provides carbon sequestration.

TYPES OF COMPOSTING

Commercial composting facilities accelerate the breakdown of organic materials, like those in our commercially compostable packaging. The two most common types of commercial composting today are windrow and Aerated Static Pile, according to BPI. A third method uses in-vessel, positive aeration, membrane laminate technology.

In-vessel composting (IVC) is a method of composting that involves placing organic materials into a closed container, such as a drum, silo, or concrete-lined trench. The container allows for the composting process to take place in an enclosed environment, which allows for better control of environmental conditions such as temperature, moisture, and airflow. The material is mechanically turned or mixed to ensure it is aerated.
